Fewer People Are Engaging with Trump Online—Here’s Why It Matters
The explosion of news during Trump’s first thirty days has driven some Democratic and non-political users to tune him out entirely. According to our analysis of social media conversations over the last month it is clear that people are just not interested.
We’ve observed a decline not only in the volume of posts about Trump but also in the engagement those posts are generating. These conversations are driven mostly by Trump supporters, news outlets, and political voices who push the same narratives time and time again.
If you exclude overtly political accounts, the decline becomes even sharper, highlighting the growing disinterest among everyday people.
As the bio keywords below show, conversations are increasingly driven by stalwart supporters, crypto enthusiasts, and right-wing evangelicals, rather than a diverse audience.
While Trump has been quite busy in his first month back in office, it seems that upending government structures isn’t attracting attention of the general population. The administrations current messaging isn’t landing with anyone – but why?
It could have something to do with the lack of interest in renaming the Gulf of Mexico, while “the annual inflation rate has risen in the three months since the November election to 3%, with gasoline prices climbing” (APNews).
However, it’s worth noting that many of Trump’s most vocal opponents are either threatening to leave or have already left X and Facebook for Bluesky or other platforms, splintering what was once a unified audience of dissent.
As Kyle Tharp recently noted, progressive organizations that moved to Bluesky have seen a massive decline in their social audiences.
For social impact campaigns, this fragmentation highlights the need to maintain a presence across multiple platforms to reach audiences where they are. In an era of polarized platforms and shifting audiences, strategic adaptability is the key to staying visible, mobilizing communities, and making an impact.
